Elephants and elephant festivals are an integral part of Indian culture and are primarily concentrated in the southern State of Kerala. There are approximately 120 festivals featuring more than 500 elephants concentrated in an eight month festival season running from November through June.
Distance prevents the majority of Indians from attending festivals in person, with nearly all festivals being located in the State of Kerala. Kerala also has the highest non-resident population of any state in India. Thirty-nine percent of all households have at least one member who is working or has worked outside of the state. The number of people who have worked outside Kerala is more than half of the total number of households in the state.
Elephant Spotlight was founded in 2007 by elephant fans from Kerala, India who wanted to share their passion for Elephants with friends and family now living outside Kerala and in other parts of India.
By creating a central resource for elephant and festival related information, the fan, owner, broker, and festival organizer community have the ability to inform each other and share in this unique aspect of Indian culture with the rest of the world.
All elephant fans are invited to participate and share their pictures and stories. Elephant Spotlight's mission is to become the largest accumulation of user-based data about Indian elephants and festivals. If it is elephant related, you will be able to find it here.
